Relationship Between Donata and Her Father (Daughter of Venice)

Donata went to her father’s room and requested about Laura and her having a tutorial with their brothers. Because she wanted to get education like her brothers and learn about the business. At first, Donata felt uncomfortable with her father, and father thought Donata is just one of his daughters. But in the end, father recognized Donata is intelligent, and has an interest in learning something new.

For the relationship between Donata and father, she has an uncomfortable connection with him. “I’ve twisted Bortolo’s bareta so hard that it’s begun to rip. In a frenzy, I stash the bareta back under my pillow and race out of our bedchamber.” (Pg.106) Donata is very nervous and scared to go and ask her father that she wants to get the tutorial with her brothers. Because it is not normal that women ask to have tutorial about business in that times. So she worried about her father become furious to her because her request is against the family law.

When Donata ask her father, father cannot understand what is Donata talking about. “What are you talking about, daughter?” (Pg.107) Father thinks Donata is just one of his daughters. He cannot understand Donata’s feeling, so it means he was not really concerned about her before. He is not really emphasizing Donata and not treats her individually.

After Donata and father’s conversation, father start looking Donata individually, and realized she is a smart girl. “Your audacity almost offends me, Donata. I fear for you… Yes Donata, you and your sister may listen in on the tutorial.” (Pg.107-108) Father is worrying about Donata get disappointment in the
future, because the society is not accept women doing business like men doing. But he recognized Donata is smart and intelligent, so he let Donata having the tutorial. So, father start treating Donata differently.

The relationship between Donata and her father is not comfortable. Donata has a difficulty to talk with her father. It tells that they are not really close to each other. When Donata requested to her father, father couldn’t understand what Donata is talking about. He didn’t see her individually, but later, he realized Donata is a smart girl so he let her having a tutorial. He finally treats Donata individually and starts noticing about her.
